Oʻahu
Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary
Tours available on request with 3-4 people.
Come and see aeʻo (stilts), ʻalae ʻula (gallinules), ʻalae keʻokeʻo (coots) and other waterbirds at the Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary on the island of Oʻahu. Learn about these endangered birds and about the Kawainui – Hāmākua Marsh.
Email your guide, Colleen Soares, at csoares48@gmail.com for additional information and to request a tour.
‘Aiea Loop Trail, Honolulu
Tours are available on request with 3-4 people.
Join Hawaiʻi Audubon Society for a walk through an upper-elevation forest in spring/summer (dryer) season. It is one of the best trails on O‘ahu where it is possible to see ʻelepaio and ‘amakihi. Other birds include Warbling White-eye and White-rumped Shama. Plants include ‘ohi‘a lehua, koa, ‘olapa, ‘ie‘ie, iliahi, and Lemon eucalyptus. The trail is five miles round trip. It is a lovely walk and you may hear birds, although the high canopy makes viewing birds quite challenging.
NOTE: I do not schedule tours of Aiea Loop during the wet season (Jan-May). The trailhead begins at 1100 feet in the mountains above Aiea. Therefore it is often wet and muddy. Birds also enjoy their comfort and are rarely seen in the rain. I suggest you look for birds at a lower elevation and wait for a few dry days in Spring-summer to do Aiea Loop. Happy birding!
