Bird and Learn: A Weekend at Volcano

We just finished our Bird and Learn weekend at Volcano National Park.

We had about about 25 participants for the classroom presentations on Saturday. Seth Judge of Volcano National Parks presented his research on the Population Trends of the Forest Birds at Volcano National Park. Mike Carion gave a practical guide to using e-Bird. Kate Righter taught how to nature journal while bird watching and how to draw kolea, and then participants went outside to practice nature journaling inspired by the lovely old ʻōhia lehua tree right outside the room.

On Sunday, we had a similar sized group. We met at the Kīlauea visitor center, and went out on the Crater Rim trail, hoping to see a koa‘e kea (White-tailed Tropicbird) Our biggest find was an ‘io that Felicia located. We also saw a large spider. ‘Apapane were everywhere, but we did not find the tropicbird.

Thanks to all who joined us!
