3rd Annual Walk For The Wild with the Friends of Hakalau Forest (Big Island)

On October 5th, Friends of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge will host the 3rd Annual Walk For The Wild event. If you have never been to Hakalau Forest, this is a must do event. It is a unique opportunity to visit a magical destination on MaunaKea, with a dozen stations along the limited access 5K Pua Akala loop. Throughout the trail you will find knowledgeable biologists, botanists, entomologists, and other natural history interpreters eager to share their joy for birds and this special place with you.

Those of you not able to attend in person can register and walk 5k wherever you are, celebrating National Wildlife Refuge Week from a distance.

Registration for this event is scheduled to go live on August 28th, please register early at the Friends of Hakalau’s website (link at right and below).  This is a free event and hosted by the Friends of Hakalau and you must register to attend. In 2023, registration was capped at 500 registrants and spots filled up in September.

While participation is free, you can support the Friends of Hakalau Forest NWR by donating to their team at their website and/or on the day of the event.

Warning: The drive into Hakalu Forest NWR requires an AWD or 4WD vehicle and takes about an hour from the pavement at the Mauna Kea Observatory Road off of the Daniel K Inouye Highway.
