Join the Hawaiʻi Audubon Society for a bird tour at Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Kailua!

Wear walking shoes (sneakers OK) and bring water, snacks, sunscreen, bug repellent, hat (optional), binoculars (optional).

The Kawainui and Hāmākua Marsh Complex has been designated as a Ramsar Convention Wetland of International Importance especially for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for waterfowl habitat. This protected area is a haven for native birds and wildlife, such as the federally endangered waterbirds, the Hawaiian Stilt (aeʻo), Hawaiian Gallinule (ʻalae ʻula), and Hawaiian Coot (ʻalae keʻokeʻo).

Parking: The entrance to Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is directly next to 268 Hāmākua Drive in Kailua. We recommend driving from Kailua town. After passing Firestone on the right hand side, you’ll take a right turn into the entrance, just before you reach 268 Hāmākua Drive. The chain link gate will be open and parking is available on-site, inside the gate.
