The Palikea Trail is a moderate hike, approximately 3 miles roundtrip, with an elevation change of about 300 feet to the summit ridgeline of the Waiʻanae Mountains. People with a fear of heights are advised that there are sheer drop-offs next to the trail in some places. The summit ridgeline affords spectacular views (weather permitting) of Nanakuli Valley, Lualualei Valley, and the central expanse of the Waiʻanae Mountains. Although it begins in non-native planted forest, the ridge trail steadily moves through areas containing more and more native species, so that by the end of the trail you are in a native forest of ʻohiʻa and native shrubs. Native forest birds such as ʻapapane, ʻelepaio, and amakihi have been seen from this trail.
Hike leaders: Lynette Williams and Bret Mossman.
Tour size: limited to 12 people; HAS members, ʻElepaio subscribers and Christmas Bird Count participants have first preference for this hike.
Two waivers will need to be filled out for this event, which will be provided to you after your registration has been confirmed.
What to bring: Please wear shoes with good traction and adaptable clothing for hot to cool weather. Layering is recommended; the weather is often cool and very windy, and can change quickly. Bring waterproof rain gear, water, lunch or snacks, and any personal medication you might need. Optional items include binoculars, sun screen, mosquito repellent, and a hat. Make sure your shoes and gear are clean–we don’t want to bring invasive weed seeds into this area. There are no bathrooms available.
Where to meet: At location in the Makakilo neighborhood which will be provided to participants. We’ll carpool up to the trailhead, hike the Palikea Trail, and will probably be done around 3pm. Since we must enter and leave as a group through the locked gates, no late entry or early departure by individuals is possible.
